Description
My Pond Lily Leaf Bird Baths are the perfect, distinctive addition to your garden. The pond lily leaf top allows the perfect amount of rainwater to collect, so birds can happily bathe and drink. The top is removable and has a cylindrical insert to ensure it remains in place even during high winds. A sand bag also sits in the base to give the whole structure more weight.
Each Pond Lily leaf Bird bath is fired to 1260 degrees stoneware, so frost resistant and suitable for use all year round*. The base is thrown on the potter’s wheel and the top is slab built using a a real pond lily leaf to create the impression in clay. An attractive green glaze emphasises the patterns and texture to compliment any garden.
Making Process
Firstly, I use a ‘Nymphaea lotus (Egyptian blue lotus)‘ leaf to create the impression in clay and then cut around the pond lily shape allowing for extra clay margin at the edges. I then mould and tease the clay in an upward motion, using water, to create a fluted fine rim. This brings an authentic quality to the dish, also reminiscent of the ‘Victoria Amazonica‘ leaves – I used a little artistic license to create a hybrid of the two types!
The second part of the process is throwing the base on the potters wheel. Occasionally, this is done in two sections (joined together) if the piece is very tall. I also make a cylindrical insert at this stage to use on the inner surface of the top.

Glaze Variation: please be aware, due to the handmade and unique element of each piece made, there will be slight variations in glaze colour and texture. Some items may be more olive green and some may have a more mint green tint. There may also be areas of rustic brown and charcoal grey breaking through in some areas where the leaf veins are more prominent. These colours are indicative of the variations you find in the real pond lily leaves and in any natural leaf formation.
Care
*Although the bird bath is stoneware and hence frost resistant, I would suggest bringing it inside during severe frost conditions.
