My small leaf vase ‘Huahui’ is inspired by my love of nature, clay and an appreciation for the chinese art of flower painting called ‘huahui’. When I was a child, my father gave me some old painting books and one of them included huahui painting. I went on to practise painting peonies and leaves with a bamboo brush. Hence, this is how I have applied the platinum and gold lustre to this unique vase. Again layers of different clays create purposeful fractures in the body of the vase, conjuring an organic fragility, linking to my philosophy below.

The Philosophy Behind My Signature Vase Collection
Firstly, I throw with stoneware clays and porcelain on the Potter’s Wheel to create an organic vase form. Next, I use copper oxide in between the layers of clay to form a subtle green and then tease the porcelain at the top to form a delicate fluted rim. Next I paint copper oxide leaves and branches onto the bisque fired surface in readiness for the flower decoration. After glazing to 1260 degrees, I paint on the peony flowers using platinum and gold lustres with a bamboo brush. Every mark I make has an intention and energy of it’s own. At the final stage, I fire the lustres to 740 degrees, allowing them to develop a beautiful metallic sheen.
