Description
My small leaf vase ‘Impressions’ is inspired by my love of nature, clay and a curiosity in the relationship between the life span of leaves and our own lives. I’m interested in how we view fragility in society and how the purposeful fractures in this vase (created when two different clays meet), cause a response from the onlooker. Are we able to appreciate beauty when it’s not ‘perfect’? How do we view aging and transformation in our own lives; after all, the wrinkles on our own faces tell the story of our lives much like skeleton leaves in nature.

The Philosophy Behind My Signature Vase Collection
Making Process
Firstly, I throw with stoneware clays and porcelain on the Potter’s Wheel to create an organic vase form. I manipulate the form from the inside to create a subtle rotation in the form to mimick movement and growth. Following this, I use real leaves to make impressions in the clay, adding texture to harmonise with the form. I use a sharp craft knife to cut into areas so light can penetrate. Then finally, layers of oxide, glaze and beautiful lustres enhance these open ‘slits’ in the design.
I use porcelain and stoneware clays to make each piece, firing to 1020 bisque initially, then 1260+ to mature the porcelain and glazes. The third firing allows platinum and gold lustre to mature on the surface design.
