Ceramic sculptures for interior designers, including bespoke ceramic commissions and sculptural vases for interiors. Sonya Wilkins creates handmade, nature-inspired ceramic pieces designed to enhance luxury interiors through texture, form and presence

Ceramic Sculptures for Interior Designers

When I create ceramic work, I am always aware that it will exist within a space, not in isolation

The relationship between object and environment is central to my practice. Sculptural ceramics can bring a sense of balance, grounding and quiet focus to an interior, particularly when they are chosen with care and intention

For interior designers, ceramic sculptures offer more than visual interest. They introduce texture, soften architectural lines and create subtle focal points that guide the experience of a room. Also, in open plan living spaces, where flow and cohesion are essential, sculptural vases for interiors can act as anchors without imposing structure. They help define areas while maintaining openness

Clay as a Communicative Medium

My practice responds to this through a combination of hand-built sculptural forms, nature-led processes and an ongoing exploration of clay as a communicative medium

The vessels and sculptural pieces I create are informed by landscape, particularly woodland environments, where texture, erosion, growth and resilience are constantly at play

Translation

These influences are not translated literally, but are allowed to emerge through form, surface, rhythm and my own remember-ings from time spent studying in nature; together with intention

How Interior Designers Use Ceramic Art in Spaces

Interior designers often work with layers of material and tone. Clay integrates naturally within this process because it carries an organic quality that complements wood, stone and textiles.

Choosing statement ceramics for luxury interiors involves more than selecting an object that looks appropriate. It involves understanding how a piece responds to light, scale and surrounding materials. Additionally, the role of texture and form in ceramic styling is particularly important. Surfaces that retain the trace of making introduce depth, while organic forms soften rigid lines and bring a sense of fluidity.

“Each piece I create is shaped with an awareness of how it will be encountered in a space, how light will move across it and how it might invite a moment of pause.”

As part of a wider community of emerging ceramic artists in the UK, my work aligns with a growing movement towards slower, more intentional making. There is increasing interest from galleries in fine art ceramic artists in the UK whose work holds both aesthetic presence and conceptual depth

My MA in Fine Art (Ceramics), combined with my background as a Reiki Master Teacher and holistic practitioner, informs a practice that is both technically considered and intuitively guided. Clay is approached as a responsive material, one that records touch, time and intention

Bespoke Ceramic Commissions for Interior Projects

Bespoke ceramic commissions allow for a more integrated approach. Working collaboratively with interior designers enables me to create pieces that respond directly to the needs of a project, whether through scale, form or placement

This may include:

  • Custom ceramic vases for interior spaces, matching specific colour schemes
  • Site-specific ceramic installations to requested dimensions
  • Made to order ceramic pieces for residential properties
  • Bespoke ceramic pieces for hospitality projects
  • Sculptural focal pieces for open plan environments
  • Outdoor sculptural forms to enhance landscaped gardens and parks

For designers looking to specify handmade ceramics in interior projects, this process ensures that each piece feels considered and connected to the overall design narrative

This approach has resonance for curators seeking sculptural ceramic artists whose work sits comfortably within both gallery and domestic contexts.

Each piece is created to stand independently as an artwork, while also having the potential to be lived with and enjoyed

Supporting Atmosphere and Wellbeing

There is increasing awareness of how materials influence wellbeing within interior spaces. Clay, as an earth-derived material, carries a natural grounding quality. It invites touch and slows perception, offering a counterbalance to more polished or controlled surfaces.

This aligns with biophilic design principles, where natural materials are used to support calm, connection and sensory balance.

Quiet Presence

The best ceramic pieces for open plan living spaces are those that hold presence quietly. They do not dominate, but they contribute to the overall feeling of the space.

“Clay allows me to explore the quiet relationship between strength and vulnerability. Each piece holds a sense of that balance, shaped slowly and with care”

I am particularly interested in working with galleries who are exploring contemporary clay artists and who value the integration of art, nature and human experience within their exhibitions
